UPDATE - JULY 18, 2012

WE DID IT! Production wrapped early in the morning of July 16th, and it appears that we got everything we needed. The images looked great, and the performances were spot-on. Editorial begins TONIGHT! Thanks for everyone's help. Stay tuned!

-Jim

--------

"Perfectly Normal" is a short film script I wrote and intend to direct in the Summer of 2012. Rebecca Brillhart is producing, and she's awesome.

We've raised our money, and are now in the process of scouting locations, casting and crewing-up for a mid-July shoot. Very exciting!

SYNOPSIS

Cassie, 35, thinks she’s found the man of her dreams. Dan, 35, is handsome, charming and has a great job… Unfortunately, he’s her therapist, and when she turns-up the heat in-session, he’s forced to make the ethical choice, dropping her as a client. Some time later, they meet and begin a romance, exactly as Cassie had dreamed… but is the relationship a bit too dreamy? By the end, both Dan and Cassie discover neither of them are perfect, but they must decide if their particular amount of “bad” might actually be "Perfectly Normal."

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Once I entered my thirties, I noticed that people around me were getting much less picky about their dating requirements. The drive to settle-down was resulting in a "willingness to settle," and actions that used to be deal-breakers were now “no big deal.” I found myself obsessed with one question: how much “crazy” could one overlook if it meant finally finding true love?

In response to this question, I wrote the short film “Perfectly Normal.” Two people - one therapist and one patient - both with their own serious hang-ups and draw-backs, drawn together by a universal desire to find the perfect partner. At the end of the day, the film is not an answer so much as a question for the audience: when it comes to bad behavior, how much is too much?

I haven’t really seen a film tackle this exact concept and theme before, so I’m excited to see how audiences respond to it!

TECHNICAL INFO

“Perfectly Normal” will be approximately 10 minutes long, shot in color with a filmic look on the Red Epic camera, finished in HD and delivered on whatever medium festivals and distributors require. We aim to cast somewhat known actors in the roles and our crew will be tip-top.

We are currently seeking a publicist.

Pre-production is scheduled to begin in June, 2012, with the shoot tentatively planned for Mid-July (depending on actor and crew availability).

PS: Here's a preview of the storyboards created for the film...

I am currently employed as an Executive Producer in On Air at Sundance Channel in New York. At that job I oversee creative promotional campaigns, and I also concept, produce and direct branded content. Prior to that I made my living in Los Angeles as a freelance commercial director and post-production producer.

Fiction filmmaking is a big component of my experience as well. In 2006 I produced the feature film “Ciao”, which received theatrical distribution in 12 cities nationwide, and in 2003 I co-wrote, directed and produced a straight-to-DVD (and VOD) horror feature entitled “Bloodshed.”

I’ve lived in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Missoula, Montana, and I spent my first 17+ years in the San Francisco Bay Area. In my previous lives, I was a Snowboard Instructor, Army Reservist, Backcountry Mountaineer, Moving Truck Driver, Industrial Electrician's Apprentice and Child of the Late 70's and early 80's.

Now I’m kicking-ass in New York with my lovely wife, six healthy plants, and a brand-new A/C unit. Yeah, the big one, 1500 watts. Cools the whole house.

Because you just can't mess around with that sort of thing.

Peace!

I had the pleasure of running the launch campaign for the Emmy Award-nominated (Best Actor & Best Direction) Sundance Channel Mini-Series "Carlos".

For this campaign I directed a series of short doc-style interviews with the lead actor from the mini-series, Edgar Ramirez. In total, there were five individual "Faces" of Carlos, plus a combo spot and several IDs. Some of the highlights are below.

(Oh yeah, I highly recommend that you take a look at the Carlos Launch Spot - click on the Index above - prior to viewing these.)

I produced and directed this fund-raising video for the Grameen Foundation, a non-profit organization in the U.S. committed to expanding the reach of microfinance lending across the developing world. We shot on the Red camera in and around Bangalore, India, with an all-local crew (except for me and my DP, Vincent Wrenn).

We had 3 days of location scouting followed by 3 days of shooting, which sometimes took us over 70km into the countryside. The Red camera and camera crew were flown out of Mumbai, and our fantastic fixer (local producer) in Bangalore, Mohan Kailasam, procured the remainder of the crew locally in Bangalore.

FYI, the target audience is high-dollar investors who are, for the most part, very knowledgeable about the microfinance industry, so this video focuses on the business aspects of microfinance. That said, I tried to make it as engaging as possible, given the inherently boring nature of the content!!!
